Fonda, Henry (Jaynes)

Fonda, Henry (Jaynes)
U.S. actor. Born in Grand Island, Neb., he achieved success on Broadway in The Farmer Takes a Wife (1934), which led him to Hollywood for the film version (1935). He portrayed a thoughtful man of integrity in such films as Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). He also made such comedies as The Lady Eve (1941) and The Male Animal (1942) and dramas such as Twelve Angry Men (1957) and Advise and Consent (1961). He returned to the stage in Mister Roberts (1948, Tony award; film, 1955). His last film, On Golden Pond (1981, Academy Award), also starred his daughter Jane Fonda. His son Peter (born 1939) achieved fame in The Wild Angels (1966), The Trip (1967), and especially Easy Rider (1969), which he also cowrote and produced; his later career was revived in Ulee's Gold (1997).
