Spielberg, Steven
U.S. film director and producer. Born in Cincinnati, he began making films in high school. As a director of television movies for Universal Pictures, he made the thriller Duel (1971), and in 1974 he directed the feature film The Sugarland Express. His shark-attack thriller Jaws (1975) became one of the highest-grossing movies ever, and he went on to direct such huge successes as Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and E.T.—the Extraterrestrial (1982). His later movies include Jurassic Park (1993), Schindler's List (1993, Academy Award), The Color Purple (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Amistad (1997), and Saving Private Ryan (1998, Academy Award). His brisk editing, rich color cinematography, memorable sound tracks, and inventive special effects have made him, by some measures, the most successful filmmaker in the world. In 1994 he cofounded DreamWorks SKG, a film, animation, and television production company.
