Simpson, O(renthal) J(ames)
U.S. football player. Born in San Francisco, he played tackle and fullback in high school. At USC as a running back (1965-68), Simpson set rushing records, was named All-American, and won the Heisman Trophy (1968). He joined the Buffalo Bills in 1969, with whom he continued to set records and became a great box-office draw. Knee injuries led to his being traded in 1978 to the San Francisco 49ers; he retired after the 1979 season. Handsome and genial, he became a popular film and television actor, a successful advertising spokesman, and a well-regarded sports commentator. In 1994 his estranged wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman were stabbed to death outside her house. Charged with the murders, Simpson became the defendant in one of the most celebrated criminal trials in history, a long televised trial that attracted unprecedented public attention. A jury acquitted him of all charges in 1995, but in a separate civil trial in 1997 he was found guilty in the wrongful-death suit brought by the Brown and Goldman families.
