Sinatra, Frank
U.S. singer and actor. Born in Hoboken, N.J., Sinatra began his singing career in the mid-1930s and was discovered by Harry James, who immediately recruited him. He achieved sweeping national popularity in 1940-42 while singing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He sang on the radio program “Your Hit Parade” 1943-45, while becoming a favorite performer in theaters and nightclubs. After 1953 he performed and recorded using arrangements by Nelson Riddle, Billy May, and Gordon Jenkins, reaching his peak in such albums as In the Wee Small Hours (1955), Songs for Swingin' Lovers (1956), Come Fly with Me (1958), and Only the Lonely (1958). He appeared in about 80 films; his performance in From Here to Eternity (1953, Academy Award) revived his flagging career, and he later starred in such film musicals as Guys and Dolls (1955), High Society (1956), and Pal Joey (1957), and such dramas as The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and The Manchurian Candidate (1962). In 1961 he founded Reprise Records. His masterly performances, alternately swinging and affectingly melancholic, brought him a success unparalleled in the history of American popular music.
